The Ascension window in Le Mans Cathedral : fascination and interpretation
The exhibition opens with a small section dedicated to the famous early 12ᵗʰ century stained-glass window representing the Ascension of Christ in Le Mans Cathedral. This work is considered as the most ancient stained-glass window still in place in a monument in France.
The window is rediscovered in the mid-19ᵗʰ century. From then onwards, it has been a continuous source of fascination for artists and historians.
Indeed it is admired, copied and completed throughout the 20ᵗʰ century. Presented here is a copy of the 12ᵗʰ century panel commissioned in 1953 by Parisian curator Paul Deschamps who wished to present an exact replica of the Le Mans medieval masterpiece in his architecture museum at the Trocadero.
